Initially, the "quality" of these leaked videos was abysmal. Grainy, pixelated, and poorly lit, they were artifacts of a nascent technology. However, as smartphone cameras evolved to capture 4K video and high-fidelity audio, the nature of the scandal mutated. Today, a leaked MMS can be "high quality" in the strictest technical sense—crystal clear, detailed, and easily identifiable. This technical leap has had devastating consequences. The higher the resolution, the easier it is to identify victims, automate non-consensual pornography (deepfakes), and amplify public shaming. Thus, the pursuit of high-definition recording has created a tool of high-definition destruction. The clarity that benefits filmmakers and families has equally armed abusers and hackers.
But as a lifestyle content creator focused on India, I’ve learned that the real story isn’t frozen in a history book. It’s messy, loud, colorful, and constantly negotiating between parampara (tradition) and pragati (progress).
In response to the DESI MMS scandal, there have been calls for stricter regulations and more effective enforcement of existing laws to protect individuals' privacy. The Indian government and legal system have been prompted to revisit and revise legislation related to cybercrimes, including the Information Technology Act, 2000, and to enhance the mechanisms for addressing digital harassment and privacy violations.
