The good news: recent years have seen "beyond ultimate" efforts to save them.

It would be easy to despair. Four Asian pangolin species are now critically endangered, and the Sunda pangolin has declined by 80% in 21 years. But “beyond ultimate crack best” can also describe the resilience of the species and the people saving them.

A pangolin’s tongue can be longer than its entire body — up to 40 cm in the giant pangolin. But it doesn’t attach in its mouth. It anchors in the pelvis, near the last pair of ribs. When retracted, it coils inside a special sheath in the chest cavity.
