The episode, originally titled "The Dark Hand," opens with Jackie Chan, an archaeologist, discovering a mysterious shield in a cave in the Bahamas. Unbeknownst to him, the shield is one of twelve talismans imbued with the powers of the Chinese zodiac. The villainous organization The Dark Hand, led by the shadowy Valmont and empowered by the sorcerous spirits of the Shendu, immediately pursues him. From a narrative perspective, this first episode masterfully establishes the series’ core formula: Jackie must retrieve magical artifacts while protecting his bumbling but lovable uncle (Uncle) and his rebellious niece (Jade). The pacing is tight, the fight scenes mimic Chan’s signature slapstick style, and the stakes are immediately clear.
