In the 1940s, Isaac Asimov conceived a future Galactic Empire on the brink of inevitable decline. Inspired by Edward Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire , Asimov created Hari Seldon, a mathematician who develops “psychohistory”—a statistical discipline capable of predicting the future behavior of large populations.
