"Superman" was the brainchild of producers Alexander Salkind and Ilya Salkind, who had acquired the rights to the Superman character from DC Comics. They brought on board Richard Donner, who was fresh from the success of "The Omen" (1976) and "The Go-Between" (1975). Donner's vision for the film was ambitious, and he worked closely with screenwriter Mario Puzo to craft a story that would do justice to the iconic character.

When Superman was released in December 1978, the concept of a "superhero blockbuster" didn't really exist. Comic book movies were often campy and low-budget (think the 1966 Batman movie). Warner Bros. took a massive gamble, handing the reins to director Richard Donner and casting a relatively unknown actor, Christopher Reeve, alongside Hollywood heavyweights like Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman. superman 1978 vegamovies
